Overview

Upper Uncompahgre River is our wettest canyon. The canyon begins with a 12ft jump and features natural rock slides, walking, scrambling across rock, swimming and rappelling; this variety makes it a canyon that stands out in Ouray. This is Ouray’s only canyon with slides and jumps, while this isn’t what makes a canyon, it does add to the fun factor!

Itinerary description

This canyon offers excellent opportunities for exploration: pools of fresh water, deep gorges, glimpses of old mining equipment, scrambling through larger boulders and rappelling waterfalls.

Upper Uncompahgre River is a little cooler than some of our other canyons due to it being an aquatic canyon. There is also a considerable amount of walking on uneven terrain to be considered before booking this trip. The total beginner is best suited to Portland Creek, Angel Creek or both!

It’s important to have a good breakfast before you go on any canyoning trip. During the trip we’ll take a break for snacks, to help keep your energy levels up!

Canyoning Colorado honor previous experience for that is relevant to canyoning. Our intermediate tours are a big step up physically and mentally from our beginner tours; we have to employ strong prerequisites to ensure safety levels remain appropriate. If you feel you have relevant experience that is sufficient for the demands of an intermediate tour please get in touch prior to booking.

Pre-requisites

  • Previous Canyoning / Canyoneering Experience or Relevant Experience
  • Excellent Physical Fitness
  • Swimming experience is necessary so that you are prepared for waterfalls in the canyon
  • 18 years old, or older!
  • Two people must book on for a confirmed trip

At Canyoning Colorado we consider previous experience and lifestyle as to whether you are suited to an intermediate canyon. If you do not have canyoning/canyoneering experience but you live a highly active lifestyle, climb regularly (lead, top rope), are an avid whitewater paddler, have experience working with ropes or at height, then you might be suited to intermediate/advanced canyons.
